It also would be a great companion piece to early colonial American lit as I found myself thinking of THE CRUCIBLE and other works about the American wilds and the magic that once lived here. As every line is written, Joan Harris convinces me she is the best writer alive today. I'm so glad I did!

After a couple of dud books in a row, it was good to get back to my guilty pleasure of, I suppose, dark fairy tales. The prose was beautiful at the beginning, but it felt like the author gave up half way through.

Beautiful, ethereal, otherworldly. It's based on a story from British folklore - the Bonny Brown Girl - and it made me see the tale from a totally different point of view. A beautiful and quick read. I got this after reading the blue salt road and so far I’m enjoying it just as much. This is the perfect fairytale – love, obsession, revenge and dark magic blended together in a delightful fable.
As for the story itself, it has everything you could want from a fairytale.
