The square was closed off to foot traffic most of the time but all I needed to do was to tell the Police I was staying as a guest of the hotel and I was let through most of the time. Our Hotel is situated in Piazza di Montecitorio and we have possibility to assign rooms on the square or street view. If our guest need a quiet room we also have internal rooms (on the courtyard). We also easily walked to the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo in one direction, Piazza Navona and Campo de Fiori in the opposite direction.
