Lower temperatures and higher moisture levels result in a longer curing time. When we are through with that, we set the monument using a special setting compound made for the monument industry. The same goes for the foundations for the slant, bevel, and flush style memorials. The thickness of the poured concrete and the pad together is around 10″ and the depth of the holes is 2′ minimum. Call Rome Monument at 724-770-0100 for prices and ordering information. All grave sites must have a permanent memorial marker with a concrete footer/foundation No monuments or markers may be erected or placed in the cemetery unless approval from the Cemetery Sexton or Township offices has been given. My preferred technique for fixing a gravestone is the monolith method, where approx 1/4 - 1/3 of the total length of the headstone is buried underground, and then set in a precast concrete shoe. The base may have been placed on an earth, gravel, or crushed rock bed. A dowel fixing is where the gravestone is fixed with stainless steel dowels to a base of the same material as the headstone. When putting a monument foundation in, we use granite foundation covers. They are 4 to 5 inches thick and 4 to 6 inches longer and wider than the monument itself. Foundations are very important. If there isn’t a good foundation underneath the memorial, it will tip or settle. When putting a monument foundation in, we use granite foundation covers.

Build a concrete form out of two-by-four lumber to the dimensions determined in Step 1. All footer/foundations will be installed by the Hinckley Township Service Department.NOTE:  Installation of all footers/foundations are done from April through mid October. We dig down 3 to 4 feet and fill with wet concrete and place and level the precast concrete slab on/in the wet concrete. )A monument or marker may be delivered and installed during the months of April through mid October only.

Concrete should be allowed to cure from anywhere between three and nine days, depending upon the temperature and moisture levels, according to the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association.
