For one thing, he restrains himself admirably in contrast to many of his other roles where he goes right over the top. this film was good not capra at his best, but still well worth watching lam glad that l gave it a chance Your recently viewed items and featured recommendations A very entertaining, lighthearted film which is very thirties, with Capra's early style in full bloom. He also has good chemistry with Myrna Loy, who had starred with him in the witty pre-CodeIn the remake, the casting of Crosby instantly makes the central character, Dan Brooks, more happy go lucky than Baxter’s characteristically nervous interpretation in the original film. I definitely will now, having read your fab review. A little below par Frank Capra film - its about a racehorse called "Broadway Bill" - a bit too nice a film Certificate: Passed Great chemistry between Myrna Loy and Warner Baxter, who had a Clark Gable-ish charm as the fast-talking rogue who gets Bill his big break.

Baxter is slightly smarmy as Broadway Bill's owner, and while I think a better choice could have been made in his role, he still does a good job. He seems a bit miscast in this to me, maybe because he doesn’t seem robust enough for the character.I may not be being fair to Baxter. With Warner Baxter, Myrna Loy, Walter Connolly, Helen Vinson.

Though essentially just a stable boy there are times where, as an African American he is treated as an almost equal to the main characters. A cheerful horse trainer finds he has a winner.
There is then a funeral for the horse, where the fact that it is a victim of “greed” is spelt out – but really that shot of it on the ground has already said it all.Another happy ending is tagged on, where Dan has two new horses and returns for a romantic reunion with Alice – but the tragic twist is the climax of the story.Overall, I enjoyed both films, but they are so similar that I’d advise against watching them close together, as I did. The cast is inspired and entertaining: Myrna Loy as Alice, Helen Vinson, Margaret Hamilton, Ward Bond, Inez Courtney and Jason Robards (Sr.). Dan is encouraged to follow his dream by his unwed sister-in-law Alice (Myrna Loy) and stable hand Whitey (Clarence Muse).

I liked Warner Baxter a lot in this part. Save your money.

Sich über Frank Capra's Qualitäten als Regisseur auszulassen ist wie Eulen nach Athen tragen. Makes me smile and cry a little at the same time.Yes, all those small character parts are excellent and I agree it’s quite something to see the actors repeat their roles, though it gives me a bit of a pang to see Frankie Darro all grown up as the jockey second time around.

Comedy Turns out he’s about 50/50 in movies I have seen. The ending first gives us a fairytale, as Broadway Bill wins through, literally against the odds, and all the “suckers” who have placed those little bets are winners.
